Easily underestimated, isn't he? I mean, I understand Disney couldn't show the Sultan's true potential in the Aladdin movie since it would probably dwarf the genie's powers and ruin the plot, but I still think the story would have been a little better if he wasn't toned down quite so much.
They could have at least gone into detail about how he built a perfectly functional city in the middle of seven deserts, even though there is no such geographical location. There was that scene where he rides the flying carpet all over the place and never gets dizzy, even after the CARPET ITSELF does, but of course that's only a whiff of his abilities.
Actually, it's almost insulting how much they tone down his powers. It's like he's a completely different person in that movie. They even throw him around like he's your typical royal stooge, easily manipulated and rarely getting any work done.
But he's the Sultan. THE Sultan. He has no weaknesses. He takes no orders. Okay, you can hypnotize him sometimes but only if you're a very powerful wizard and there are absolutely NO distractions around. And even then, the only things you can make him do are tasks he does on a daily basis anyways, like giving away priceless jewelry or bossing his daughter around.
You know what? Forget that putting the Sultan at his best would ruin the story, because it definitely would have made it a better movie overall. Sure, the genie is funny, but don't you think the Sultan, THE Sultan, is a little too powerful to play second fiddle to Robin Williams?
